Wounded Warrior Run 2010

The Wounded Warrior Run which took  place over a 9 day period starting on Canada Day, the 1st of July 2010 from Dauphin Manitoba and finished 440 km later in Winnipeg's Assiniboine Park on Friday July 9th was a great success.

The fund raising campaign will continue until the end of August 2010 in aid of a number of Family Support Groups of Manitoba Military Units and the Wounded Warrior Project who provide assistance and support to our troops while they are deployed overseas or are in repatriation enroute home.

Carpiquet Medals Parade (3)
Carpiquet Medals Parade

On 24 September 2004, Carpiquet Commemorative Medals were presented to three veterans of that battle. Present at the Armoury were Bill McGowan, Bill Gale and Bill Leaman. The medals were presented by the CO with all members of the FGH on parade.

On Dec 18, 2004, the FGH held its annual Christmas dinner for the Junior Ranks, served by the Officers, WOs, and Sergeants of the regiment. Members of the FGH Association and Ghost Squadron assisted in the serving of the meals. Prior to the dinner, unit members had delivered hampers for the Winnipeg Christmas Cheer Board, an annual tradition called 'Exercise Parcel Push'. Over 300 hampers were delivered to needy families in 6 hours.

On 5 March 2005, an Open House was held at McGregor Armoury. Displays of bridge construction, using a Medium Girder Bridge, and basic defensive tactics with small arms were demonstrated. Members of B Sqn FGH assisted Engineers from 33 Fd Sqn, based in Calgary, in the construction of the bridge. Indoor displays included mines, small arms and an Iltis with Recce patrol kit. The purpose of the open house was to increase public awareness of the Canadian Forces and to showcase the new Engineer unit being formed within the FGH.

The Fort Garry Horse held a Change of Command ceremony at McGregor Armoury on 16 April 2005. LCol David Atwell, CD relinquished command of the FGH to LCol Ken Sabatier CD.

Holland Liberation 60th Anniversary May 2005 (29)
Holland Liberation 60th Anniversary May 2005

In late April and early May of 2005, a delegation of soldiers from The Fort Garry Horse, The Royal Winnipeg Rifles, and The Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders of Canada visited Belgium and Holland to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the Liberation.

Carpiquet Medal Presentation - Nov 05

A commemorative medal, made by the City of Carpiquet, France, was given to all surviving veterans of the Normandy Campaign, starting in 2004. The last medal was awarded in November of 2005.

On 17 December 2005, the traditional Junior Ranks' Christmas dinner was held at McGregor Armoury. The junior members of the Regiment were served their dinner by the Officers, Warrant Officers, Sgts and other Regimental Family members.

The first of the new Mercedes-Benz G-Wagen Command and Reconnaissance vehicles arrived in unit lines in February. Conversion training started immediately.

Exercise Thinking Bison was held in March to prepare the leadership of the unit for their part in the upcoming Brigade exercise. Computer simulation of events on the ground exercised the command and control of the unit.

Each year two leadership awards are granted by Honorary LCol Andrew Paterson. The Officer award is an engraved 1912 pattern cavalry sword, and the NCM award is an engraved M7 bayonet.

The Recce Skills Competition had teams from several infanty and armoured units, both Reg Force and Reserve. Teams were tested in tactical skills, navigation, use of artilery, and physical and mental endurance.

Members of the Garrys took part in many aspects of Ex Chargin Bison, an urban operations exercise held in the city of Winnipeg. Three camps were set up in diffent areas of the city, supporting local presence and intelligence gathering patrols.Heliborne cordon and search ops were held using an abandoned building at Kapyong Barracks.
